Why this is a thread

HLA-B27 is the gene most strongly linked to AS, most people with AS carry it. But carrying the gene doesn't mean you'll develop the disease. Only a fraction of people who are HLA-B27 positive ever get AS, which means whatever tips the scale from 'risk' to 'active disease' is doing some of the most important work in the AS story. Recent research in this thread connects HLA-B27 to specific gut bacteria and to changes in how the body handles certain amino acids. The conversation between genes and the gut may be where the answer lives.
