What this paper found
Among 189 people with thoracolumbar spine injuries, those with ankylosing spondylitis or DISH were older, were injured more often by simple falls, needed bigger operations with more levels fused, and were more likely to die in hospital or go to long-term care, though nerve recovery was similar. A stiff spine turns a minor fall into a major injury, which is the practical reason fall prevention matters so much in AS.
Why this is on the map
Trauma-centre data on a risk the map's treatment papers rarely mention: the fused spine itself.

Long-term functional and radiological outcomes among survivors of ankylosing spondylitis-associated cervical spine fractures: a cross-sectional follow-up study.
North American Spine Society journal
Among 97 survivors of neck fractures linked to ankylosing spondylitis, followed for a median of four years, most lived independently with mild neck pain and low disability, 96 percent of fractures had healed solidly, and half of those with spinal cord injury recovered fully. These fractures are dangerous at the time, but for those who come through them the long-term picture is better than most people would expect.
Plasma Proteomics Identifies Molecular Signatures and Biomarkers Associated with High Structural Damage in Ankylosing Spondylitis
Arthritis & Rheumatology
Measuring hundreds of blood proteins in people with ankylosing spondylitis, researchers found a five-protein signature, driven by platelet and tissue-remodelling proteins rather than classic inflammation markers, that identified those with heavy structural damage with high accuracy in a separate validation group. Bone damage in AS seems to run partly on a different track from inflammation, and a blood test for it looks feasible.
Preconception, pregnancy and postpartum periods in spondyloarthritis: Unmet needs and challenges from a patients and rheumatologists surveys
Joint Bone Spine
Surveys of French women with spondyloarthritis and their rheumatologists found that pregnancy is not discouraged and usually goes well, but women rated their worry about flares highly, had gaps in knowledge about biologics in pregnancy and delivery, and only a quarter of rheumatologists knew the pregnancy guidelines. The information gap is on both sides of the consultation.
Risk of peripheral artery disease following ankylosing spondylitis, 2012–2023: a nationwide cohort study in South Korea
Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology
Following 2,846 people with ankylosing spondylitis and ten times as many matched controls in South Korea for four years, AS was linked to a 40 percent higher rate of peripheral artery disease, with the largest excess in women under 60. Circulation in the legs is another thing to keep an eye on, especially for younger women with AS.
